Salsus, Which Means Salted

The word “sausage” originally comes from the Latin word "salsus," which means “salted.” Evidence shows that it was enjoyed in Italy as much as 2,000 years ago. Its long culinary history isn’t surprising. In the US, the term “Italian sausage” implies a seasoning based on fennel seeds and anise. It can be sold as either mild or spicy.

This simple and delicious Italian Sausage and Peppers recipe is a breeze to whip up for a family meal. It’s a classic dish that never gets old. Serve it over pasta or add your favourite Chilzo's Marinara Sauce, bringing this classic to life with a modern twist!

Time to Sail off into the Sunset!

Marinara ("sailor") sauce is a tomato sauce typically crafted with tomatoes, garlic, herbs, and onions. Variations may include capers, olives, spices, and a touch of wine, making it a versatile staple in Italian-American cuisine.

Now, let's dive into the intriguing origin story – legend has it that cooks aboard Neapolitan ships, returning from the Americas in the mid-16th century, concocted marinara sauce after the Spaniards introduced them to tomatoes. Another theory suggests that this savoury delight was prepared by the wives of Neapolitan sailors to welcome their husbands back from the sea. No matter what the story is, we are glad they came up with it!

Chilzo's Marinara is more than just sauce; it's a portal to the past. Onto the Recipe!

Ingredients you will need to make this Sausage and Pepper Skillet recipe:
  • 1 pound (450g) Italian Sausage Links
  • 2 Bell Peppers, thinly sliced
  • 1 Large Onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups Chilzo's Marinara Sauce
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooked Rice or Pasta for serving
Follow these simple steps to make Sausage and Pepper Skillet!
  1. Heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Drizzle in some olive oil, enough to make your veggies sing "Grease is the Word."
  2. Add the sausage links to the pan and cook them over medium heat, turning occasionally, and watch them turn golden brown like a Roman sunset. Ten minutes of cooking, and boom, they're ready to retire on a plate, sliced into bite-sized heroes.
  3. Back in the pan, add another tablespoon of olive oil if needed. Add the sliced bell peppers and onions to the pan.
  4. Keep the party sizzling! Sauté them over medium heat, until they become tender and slightly caramelised. This usually takes about 8-10 minutes.
  5. Once the peppers and onions are tender, toss the cooked sausage back into the veggies and pour (the) Chilzo's Marinara Sauce over. Stir it all up, like a maestro!
  6. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 5-7 minutes; this is the phase where the slow-blanched tomatoes in our marinara sauce work their magic, blending with the sausages to craft a culinary masterpiece!.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste, if needed. But remember, sometimes the best seasoning is pure, unadulterated sass.

Serve the sausage and pepper mixture over cooked rice or pasta.

Remember, cooking is an adventure, so have fun, get creative with Chilzo's Marinara Sauce, and let your inner chef do the cha-cha!
