A Sandwich for the Earl of Sandwich

A sandwich is just food, typically some type of protein, fats, and veggies, placed on or in between slices of bread. The basic idea was to create a portable and convenient snack where the bread serves as a wrapper or base.

Now, onto the interesting part for folks who love a good story. Legend has it that the sandwich owes its name to none other than John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. This nobleman had a knack for multitasking as he preferred to eat his food without having to stop playing cards. He admittedly had a bit of a problem. But thanks to his genius the ‘meat snugly nestled between two toasty slices’ formally got a name. His peers would keep ordering it, asking for ‘the same as Sandwich’. Talk about a winning hand!

Yet, the sandwich's story doesn't end or reasonably start there. Ancient cultures across the globe have had their own spin on handheld wraps. From Hillel the Elder's Passover wrap to the flatbreads of Western Asia and Northern Africa, people have been wrapping up deliciousness for centuries.

However, the sandwich has also been the subject of many debates. People even argue whether a hot dog or an open-faced toastie qualifies as a sandwich or not. In the USA, the Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration have their say. They have stated that a sandwich contains 35% cooked meat, and the rest is bread. Across the pond, our British pals keep it simple: if it's bread with a filling, it's a sarnie!

While the modern-day sandwich is relatively, well, modern, the concept has been around forever. So, let’s take part in the journey of this snack and make a Hot Sauce Chicken Sandwich so delicious that even the Earl puts his cards down for a minute.

A Little Hot Sauce History Lesson!

Hot sauce  is the star of Hot Ones, hands down one of the coolest interview shows on the internet. Jokes aside, Hot Sauce has come a long way from just peppers and water to the sophisticated, fermented Louisiana-style concoctions we have today.

Though its exact origins are unknown, one of the earliest hot sauces can be traced back to Central America and the Mayans (around 7500 BC). Fast forward to the 1700s, when Spanish settlers brought their pepper and tomato to the American states. Suddenly, peppers, especially the Tabasco pepper, were spreading like wildfire. As time went on people started selectively breeding different types of peppers to get the desired flavour profile.

In the mid-1800s, a certain Maunsel White decided to get spicy with his sugar plantation. He started experimenting with Tobasco [sic] Pepper, creating a concentrated essence that gave us a little taste of Louisiana's fiery spirit. It's incredible to see how nearly every culture has its own take on hot sauce, each with its unique flavour and flair!

Fermented Hot Sauce- A Probiotic Powerhouse

One could find the best of the world’s chillies and spices anywhere in our country. But the benefits of a fermented hot sauce are too many to be ignored. If made authentically, a fermented hot sauce is a probiotic powerhouse. It works wonders for your gut and digestive system, and on top of that the flavours it brings out are truly unmatched.

Chilzo’s made an authentic Louisiana Hot Sauce that honours its rich heritage. Made from fermented hot peppers, vinegar, and salt, it's a nod to those who came before us. Each bottle ensures top-notch quality and a complex flavour profile- a little smoky, savoury, and just spicy enough to wake you up.

On to the Recipe!

Ingredients you need to make Hot Sauce Chicken Sandwich:

Follow these simple steps to make Hot Sauce Chicken Sandwich:
    1. Let's kick things off! Get the chicken ready by sprinkling some salt and pepper on both sides.
    2. In a pan, add a tablespoon of cooking oil. Once it's sizzling hot, let those chicken breasts hit the floor. Cook them for about 6-7 minutes on each side until they're cooked through and no longer pink in the middle. Don't forget to give them a flip halfway through for even cooking!
    3. While the chicken is getting its groove on, let's fix the star of the show. In a small bowl, mix Chilzo’s hawt Hot Sauce and mayonnaise – truly a match made in heaven! Feel free to go crazy and adjust the hot sauce to your preferred spice level.
    4. Once the chicken is done, give it a chance to catch its breath. Let it rest for a few minutes while you prepare for the sandwich assembly line.
    5. Time to toast those bread slices! Whether you're popping them in the toaster or giving them a quick tan in the pan, a little toasting sure does add an extra layer of flavour to the whole dish.
    6. Let the sandwich stacking begin! Spread that hot and saucy mayo mixture on one side of each bread slice. It's the secret sauce that will tie it all together!
    7. Now, let's add some colour to the mix! Lay down a crisp lettuce leaf and a couple of tomato slices on two of the bread slices – we're building a sandwich masterpiece here!
    8. Slice and dice those cooked chicken breasts into thin strips. Spread them evenly between the two sandwiches.
    9. Top it all off with the remaining bread slices to create the ultimate flavour fusion.

Voila! Your Hot Sauce hangover chicken sandwiches are ready to bring you back to life.

Note: Feel free to get creative and add your own little twists. After all, cooking is all about having fun and making delicious memories!
